AVAILABLE SERVICES IN AUSTRALIA
In recent decades, Australia has become an internationally competitive, advanced market economy due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980s and its location in one of the fastest growing regions of the world economy. It has an advanced and rather mature telecom market, showing steady but slow growth in the most innovative sectors and some stagnation or decline in older technologies. Huge distances and a mostly inhabited central region also present infrastructure challenges for telecom coverage to the rural and indigenous population.

DETAILS
The Internet penetration rate was almost 88% by the end of 2018. Significant investment in mobile networks, despite opting not to secure spectrum in the 700MHz band at auction, should provide customers with greater confidence in the company’s network capabilities. Australia is predicted to be one of the top four of markets that will drive the growth of 5G in Asia, and 5G connections are expected to account for around 50-60% of total connections by 2025.
TELECOMS MARKET
The fixed line market in Australia has been declining at a significant and increasing rate over the past five years, mainly because of the dominance of the mobile segment and the growth of the mobile broadband segment. The market is predicted to further decline in the coming years as both mobile and mobile broadband penetration continue to increase. The release of spectrum for LTE mobile broadband use, as well as increased uptake by consumers and businesses, is helping to offset the decline in revenue from fixed-line services. The Australian mobile market is dominated by three major mobile network operators, although there is also a significant number of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO). The second-tier market is still growing although its expansion was slower in 2019. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is responsible for the regulation of broadcasting, the internet, radio communications, and telecommunications.
BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT
Australia is an open market with minimal restrictions on imports of goods and services. The process of opening up has increased productivity, stimulated growth, and made the economy more flexible and dynamic. The country is a significant exporter of natural resources, energy, and food. Australia’s abundant and diverse natural resources attract high levels of foreign investment and include extensive reserves of coal, iron, copper, gold, natural gas, uranium, and renewable energy sources. For nearly two decades, Australia benefited from a dramatic surge in its terms of trade. As export prices increased faster than import prices, the economy experienced continuous growth, low unemployment, contained inflation, very low public debt, and a strong and stable financial system. Australia entered 2018 facing a range of growth constraints, principally driven by the sharp fall in global prices of key export commodities. Demand for resources and energy from Asia and especially China is growing at a slower pace and sharp drops in export prices have impacted growth.
LOCAL PROVIDERS
INCUMBENT OPERATOR
Although the Australian telecom market was liberalized in the last decade of the 20th century, the incumbent operator Telstra continues to benefit from a dominant position in the fixed-line and broadband sectors, and is also the main player in the mobile sector, having been the first to take advantage of mobile broadband opportunities with its Next G network. This was followed through with it being the first to launch LTE services, gaining it considerable market advantages.
