AVAILABLE SERVICES IN DENMARK

Denmark has the second highest broadband penetration rate in Europe. It also has one of the highest penetration rates in the mobile sector, while revenue in the fixed-line sector is declining as more and more customers migrate to VoIP and mobile alternatives.

DETAILS

The internet penetration rate in Denmark is one of the highest in the world with 96.5% of the population by the end of 2018. A progressive regulatory regime has been a key factor in developing high-end cable and DSL infrastructure. The development of VDSL and fibre, as well as LTE-A and 5G in the mobile market, is aimed at reaching widespread access to 100Mb/s service by 2020.

TELECOMS MARKET

The Danish telecoms market is considered to be one of the most competitive in the continent. The market started to be deregulated in 1996 and it was fully liberalised in 2004. In addition to network investments by the major telcos, there were also major commitments by privatised power companies in developing fibre networks serving residential and business users within their respective supply areas. The highly competitive Danish market has led to the development of excellent service coverage throughout the country. The Danish Business Authority (Erhvervsstyrelsen) is the telecommunications regulator.

BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

Denmark’s small open economy is highly dependent on foreign trade, and the government strongly supports trade liberalization. Denmark is a net exporter of food, oil, and gas and enjoys a comfortable balance of payments surplus, but depends on imports of raw materials for the manufacturing sector. Denmark is a member of the EU but not the eurozone.

Denmark has been experiencing a modest economic expansion. Unemployment stood at 5.5% in 2017, based on the national labor survey. The labor market was tight in 2017, with corporations experiencing some difficulty finding appropriately-skilled workers to fill billets. The Danish Government offers extensive programs to train unemployed persons to work in sectors that need qualified workers. The government projects a lower deficit in 2019 of 0.7%, and public debt (EMU debt) as a share of GDP is expected to decline to 34.8% in 2019. The Danish Government plans to address increasing municipal, public housing and integration spending in the coming years.

INCUMBENT OPERATOR

TDC (formerly Tele Danmark) is the incumbent operator in Denmark. In 1996, the telecom sector was fully liberalized in Denmark, with Tele Danmark still as the largest Danish telecom company, but now operating in a market marked by a still increasing number of competitors. In 2005, five private equity funds formed Nordic Telephone Company ApS (NTC) in order to buy TDC, taking over 87.9 percent of the shares, but NTC has since then sold a significant part, retaining in 2013 only 17.7 percent of the shares in TDC. With its recent acquisition of Get cable operator in Norway, TDC aims to be the leading communications company in the whole of Scandinavia.
