AVAILABLE SERVICES IN MALAYSIA

The telecommunications sector in Malaysia has significantly grown over the last 10 years. However, this growth has been remarkable in some other areas, especially in mobile phone services first, and lately also in broadband Internet access. However, the number of fixed-line services has remained stagnant for more than a decade and there are strong hints of future decline, while there has been a contraction in mobile subscriber penetration in Malaysia, due to a saturated market and challenging market conditions. This irregular evolution in telecom services is also related to the restructuring of the main providers, due to the Malaysian government’s concerns about an excessive number of players, particularly in the mobile market.

DETAILS

The Internet penetration rate in Malaysia reached 81% by mid-2019. A modern system has been implemented featuring good intercity services mainly by microwave radio relay and an adequate intercity microwave radio relay network between Sabah and Sarawak via Brunei. A national broadband network was also planned to be rolled out. Fixed-line penetration has reached 20% and mobile-cellular teledensity exceeds 133%.

TELECOMS MARKET

The number of fixed telephone lines in Malaysia is falling and the mobile segment is expanding and controlling the telecom market, particularly in the mobile broadband sector. Malaysia’s telecom sector, although in an expanding phase, has gone through consolidation in a market that is evolving and more and more competitive. On the other hand, in the last few years, the data centre market has gone through solid growth and is expected to continue over the next years from both from local and international providers. However, the Malaysian fixed broadband market remains underdeveloped. The primary regulator of telecommunications in the Malaysia is the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

Malaysia, a middle-income country, has transformed itself since the 1970s from a producer of raw materials into an emerging multi-sector economy. The country is attempting to achieve high-income status by 2020 and to move farther up the value-added production chain by attracting investments in Islamic finance, high technology industries, biotechnology, and services. The government has also taken steps to liberalize some services sub-sectors. Malaysia is vulnerable to a fall in world commodity prices or a general slowdown in global economic activity, while struggling to boost domestic demand and reduce the economy’s dependence on exports. Falling global oil prices in the second half of the past decade strained government finances and shrunk Malaysia’s current account surplus.
