AVAILABLE SERVICES IN SOUTH KOREA

South Korea already has one of the fastest internet in the world, with even faster commercial 5G connections (upwards of a gigabit per second) predicted within the next years. The 5G project is only the latest in a long line of initiatives designed to ensure that the Korean internet is in a constant state of evolution. The South Korean private sector is also carrying out some of the most cutting-edge technological R&D in the world.

DETAILS

The Internet penetration rate was nearly 96% by the end of 2018. There is an exceedingly high mobile and mobile broadband penetration, as well as a very high fixed broadband penetration. Strong support from govt, and a technologically savvy population have catapulted the nation into one of the world’s most active telecommunication markets. 5G services were live for enterprise customers in 2019.

TELECOMS MARKET

South Korea is one of the most mature telecom markets in Asia. Compared to other Asian nations, South Korea has very high mobile and mobile broadband penetration and very high fixed broadband penetration. Fixed lines in South Korea have been gradually declining over the past five years. This trend is predicted to continue until 2023. The country also has one of the world’s most active telecommunications and Information Technology (IT) markets backed by strong support from the government. Fixed-line broadband market penetration has grown slowly over the past five years in this highly mature market. Over the next five years to 2023 growth is expected to continue to increase slowly.

BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT

After emerging from the 1950-53 war with North Korea, South Korea emerged as one of the 20th century’s most remarkable economic success stories, becoming a developed, globally connected, high-technology society within decades. Since 2017, a surge in consumer confidence led to increased export growth to drive real GDP growth to more than 3%, despite disruptions in South Korea’s trade with China over the deployment of a US missile defense system in South Korea.

Since 2018, South Korea is facing slowing economic growth – in the 2-3% range – which is not uncommon for advanced economies. This could be partially offset by efforts to address challenges arising from its rapidly aging population, inflexible labor market, continued dominance of the chaebols, and heavy reliance on exports rather than domestic consumption.

INCUMBENT OPERATOR

KT Corporation, formerly Korea Telecom, is South Korea’s largest telephone company.
The state-owned firm is South Korea’s first telephone company and as such it dominates the local landline and broadband Internet market, serving about 90 percent of the country’s fixed-line subscribers and 45 percent of high-speed Internet users. The company’s 2009 merger with KTF, its wireless subsidiary, made it the country’s ninth largest corporate conglomerate with nearly 24 trillion won ($20 billion) in assets.
